6/14/12 I Can't Count That High

6/14/12  I Can’t Count That High
We’re out of the condo and in the hotel for the first night before the big road trip begins.  It’s kind of a twilight zone (the old-timey one, without the vampires).  You know how, when you have a giant task, you kind of pace yourself and then when it’s over you allow yourself to collapse?  This is collapse time, with a surreal edge to it.
Niamh is in her own Twilight Zone today - it's all a bit much

We called the hotel ahead of time to be sure our room would be ready, but when we arrived, it hadn’t been cleaned.  The problem, explained the management, was a power outage yesterday that fritzed their computer system and wasn’t letting them know which rooms had been cleaned and which ones hadn’t (I had to wonder if it occurred to them to actually look at the rooms . . .).  So this is what happened next:

We went back to the condo to wait for the room to be cleaned.  This was easy because it’s about three seconds away.  While we were at the condo we discovered that we had left our nightlights in the bathrooms, and we will definitely want those in Maryland.  Also, the hotel manager felt badly about the mixup and gave us a voucher for a free dinner at El Torito, right next to the hotel.  Blessing!  We hadn’t figured out dinner yet and this is a great option.

An unexpected dinner gift is one of the countless blessings that we have already received on this adventure of ours.  Perhaps someday I’ll recount them, from the way our house was sold to the magical wind chimes of our condo neighbors.  So many blessings that I’m sure I can’t count them all, but I am grateful to my bones for each one.

DSCN0031.JPGAnd so tonight we’ll sleep, wrapped in the prayers and well-wishes of people who love us and whom we love.  Tomorrow, we fly up Highway 99 for the last time in a long time, on the first step of a long journey to our new home.  I’ll keep you posted.

So....Hmmmph (arms folded and look of distress on my face)... you ain't kiddin, are ya??? You're really doing this?

I want so desperately to say the right things (like thank God we got to have the last supper, YOU are so brave...blah, blah, blah) - I really want to shout and say... "California has waaaay better weather, Yosemite, John Muir stories and MEEEEEEE!!!" But, since I am so mature and grounded and realize this is not about me, I guess I'll resort to "un viaje seguro... voyage securitaires......sicheres reisen...安全な旅を (anzen'na tabi o) - or safe travels, my dear fiends - I will be keeping track. Not just as you travel, but always!
