6/12/12 The Countdown Begins

The Countdown Begins
Actually, the countdown began some time ago, it’s just that now that the whole house is packed in boxes, we have said many tearful goodbyes, and the cat is prowling around wondering what we could be thinking by turning her world upside down, the whole thing feels very . . . imminent.

Last fall we – my husband, Dwight, and I - made the decision to uproot ourselves from our native California and transplant ourselves to the mid-Atlantic region.  The move would take place after the end of the school year (we are both teachers).  We are moving to Takoma Park, Maryland, just outside of Washington D.C. to be with our daughter, son-in-law, two-year old grandson, and the on-the-way baby (due on Thanksgiving day!).

Since the decision, we have sold our home, moved to a condo to wait for the big move, divested ourselves of many belongings, and generally have done the things people do when preparing to relocate.  The time is now right.  Today is Tuesday, the moving truck arrives on Wednesday, we wrap us loose ends on Thursday, and hit the road on Friday.

What will follow is a daily – or almost daily – account of our adventure driving across the country, visiting friends along the way, stopping for a few sights, and contemplating our new lives to come.  And we’ll do it with our cat in the car.

Stop in when you can, and post an encouraging word or two.  I have a feeling we’re going to need it.
